Past You Said It!
Eight-year-old Sophie asked this question: "What is the most special thing a friend has ever given to you, and why is it important to you?"
These girls shared their thoughts:
The most special thing a friend has ever given to me was a teddy bear. It might seem like a simple gift, but when my house caught on fire and my stuffed animals were destroyed, the first thing my friend did was give me one of hers. I still have it two years later.
–Kimberely, age 11, California
My friend brought me a key chain from her trip to Paris. I put it in my locker so that I can see it every day. The gift made me feel special because I knew that my friend thought of me even though she was so far away.
–An American Girl fan, age 12, Virginia
My friend gave me a horse figurine. I love horses, but my friend is scared of them. The gift meant a lot to me because it showed me that my friend was trying hard to care about my interests and keep our friendship going.
–Lauren, age 13, Texas
On Valentine's Day, my friend gave me a sweet note. She didn't sign her name, but I knew she wrote it because I recognized the handwriting. That day, I was feeling bad because it seemed as if no one wanted to hang out with me. The note reminded me that this girl was a true friend.
–Sabrina, age 11, Indiana
The best thing my friend gave me was a doll she brought back for me from New Mexico. I loved the doll so much that I even named it after my friend.
–Alia, age 8, Massachusetts
At school, I was having a lot of trouble making friends. One day, a girl I barely knew came up to me and said, "Hey, it's my birthday. Would you like a goody bag?" We became friends, and I still have a mini stuffed animal from the bag sitting on a shelf in my room. It felt good to know that someone cared about me.
–Aidan, age 11, New York
The most special thing a friend has given to me is acceptance. I know that I can be myself around my friends without fear of judgment, and that means a lot to me.
–Meghan, age 13, Georgia
One day, I was in my friend's room looking at her bookshelf and I noticed a book series I hadn't read before. She said I could have all of the books, but I didn't accept. A few days later it was my birthday, and she gave the books to me. I was happy to have such a good friend.
–Jennifer, age 12, Iowa
A kitten is the best thing a friend has given to me. My best friend found out that she's allergic to cats and her family would have to find their new kitty a home. I love animals, so my friend asked if I'd like to have Tinkerbell. I was thrilled!
–Eloise, age 11, Kentucky
My friend gave me a charm bracelet. At the time we weren't really friends because we had had a big fight. The gift showed me that my friend wanted to mend things, and we apologized to each other.
–Kayleigh, age 13, Ohio
The most special thing a friend gave to me was writing paper, pens, stamps, envelopes, and stickers. My writing supplies help me stay in touch with her, even though she lives in another state now.
–Lilliana, age 12, Colorado
In the middle of the soccer season, I broke my leg and didn't think I'd ever play again. Then my friend decorated a gold soccer ball and gave it to me. Her gift inspired me to start playing again.
–Holly, age 9, Washington
When I was in kindergarten, my friend gave me a piece of string. Wow, string, you're probably thinking. But the reason it's important to me is that it marks how long we have been friends. Each year, I put one bead on the string. Right now there are seven beads!
–Maya, age 11, Ohio
The most special gift my friend ever gave to me is her friendship. She always helps me, cares about me, makes me laugh, and cheers me up when I have a bad day. Friendship is the best gift someone can give.
–Katherine, age 13, Illinois
